Little Wonders: A Conversation That Opened Another Trail

Sometimes God expands our world, not through dramatic moments, but through ordinary conversations with people we never expected to meet.

When we think we’ve reached the end of an adventure, we often discover it’s really the beginning of the next one.

After eight miles on the trail, I was almost back to my vehicle when I struck up a conversation with a couple who enjoy hiking throughout western Maryland and around Harpers Ferry.

It started with a simple question.

“Have you found any trails we might have missed?”

That small question turned into one of those little wonders I never could have planned.

We traded recommendations back and forth. I told them about White’s Ferry and the C&O Canal, Gambrill State Park, the overlook there, and the trails around Manassas. In return, they introduced me to places that immediately found their way onto my list—Maryland Heights, Loudoun Heights, Annapolis Rocks, and the historic Washington Monument. They even shared little details you won’t usually find on a map: peregrine falcons soaring over the cliffs, and the reminder to watch carefully for copperheads among the rocks.

A few minutes later I met a northbound Appalachian Trail thru-hiker who had already walked more than a thousand miles from Georgia and had just passed Harpers Ferry on his way toward Maine. His backpack carried everything he needed for weeks on the trail. My journey is nothing like his, but for a few moments our paths crossed, and I was reminded that every person we meet is carrying a story of their own.

As I walked the last few hundred yards to my vehicle, it struck me that none of those conversations had been on my schedule.

I set out that morning expecting nothing more than a good hike.

Instead, I came home with new destinations to explore, a deeper appreciation for those who challenge themselves in extraordinary ways, and a reminder that the best discoveries often come through people rather than places.

It also made me think back to another recommendation.

Not long ago, someone suggested this trail to me. If they hadn’t shared it, I probably wouldn’t have been here today. And if I hadn’t come, I never would have met the couple, never would have met the thru-hiker, and never would have heard about the adventures that now lie ahead.

Life has a quiet way of unfolding like that.

One conversation leads to one trail.

One trail leads to another conversation.

And before you know it, your horizons have quietly expanded—not because you planned them to, but because you were willing to take the first step.

Maybe that’s one of God’s little wonders.

Sometimes He doesn’t reveal the whole journey.

He simply places someone in our path who points us toward the next one.
