How I Lost My Peace—and Why I’m No Longer Waiting

There are moments in life that quietly change the direction of everything.

This is one of mine.

There was a time when I believed peace was something I would eventually find.

I thought if I worked hard enough, found the right person, saved enough money, or reached retirement, peace would finally arrive. It always seemed to be waiting somewhere in the future.

Then, for a while, I believed I had found it.

I met someone who seemed to embody the future I had been praying for. What drew me in was the quiet belief that our hopes and dreams were leading us in the same direction. It was the life we both seemed to long for. We talked about faith, simplicity, and a quieter life. It felt as though we were walking toward the same horizon.

As time passed, I realized something difficult.

We wanted the same destination, but we weren’t traveling the same road.

The peace we both talked about never became the peace we lived.

Instead of protecting the peace I had already found, I slowly surrendered it. Not because someone forced me to, but because I allowed my boundaries to weaken. I kept believing that if I loved a little harder, waited a little longer, or overlooked one more warning sign, eventually everything would become peaceful.

It didn’t.

Looking back, I don’t regret loving someone.

I regret allowing my own peace to become dependent on whether the relationship survived.

For years, I believed peace was just one more conversation away.

One more sacrifice.

One more promise.

One more season.

One more “I’ll get there.”

One more “Just be patient.”

Eventually, I realized I wasn’t waiting for peace anymore.

I was waiting for someone else’s promises to become my reality.

Those are two very different things.

One of the hardest lessons I’ve ever learned is that peace cannot be built on “someday.”

If peace always depends on something happening tomorrow, then today will always be filled with anxiety.

Peace has to live today.

That experience changed me.

It taught me that boundaries are not walls built to keep people out. They are fences that protect the life God is building within us. Without healthy boundaries, even good intentions can slowly give way to chaos.

The truth is, I don’t think this lesson applies only to relationships.

The longer I look around, the more I notice how much of our culture teaches us to postpone peace.

We’re taught to hurry.

Work harder.

Stay busier.

Answer one more email.

Take one more call.

Make a little more money.

Retire someday.

Enjoy life later.

Everything feels urgent.

Everything feels loud.

Even many of the stories we enjoy begin with conflict and spend nearly the entire journey trying to escape it. Conflict is part of storytelling, but sometimes I wonder if we’ve become so accustomed to chaos that we’ve forgotten what lasting peace actually looks like.

I began asking myself a simple question.

What if we’ve been postponing the very thing our hearts need today?

For me, this wasn’t only true in relationships.

It wasn’t only true in my career.

It wasn’t only true in planning for retirement.

It became a way of living.

I kept believing peace would come after the next milestone, the next success, or the next season.

But peace isn’t something to postpone.

It’s something to protect.

That realization has quietly changed the direction of my life.

It’s one of the reasons Seasons & Horizons exists.

This blog isn’t simply about travel.

It isn’t simply about discovering another hiking trail, another historic town, or another beautiful sunset.

It’s about rebuilding after chaos.

It’s about learning to notice God’s quiet gifts in ordinary moments.

It’s about choosing a slower path when the world tells us to hurry.

It’s about discovering that peace is not found in another person, another promotion, another destination, or even retirement someday.

Peace is cultivated today.

One decision.

One boundary.

One conversation.

One quiet walk.

One act of faith at a time.

I still believe in love.

I still hope to spend my life with someone someday.

But I know something now that I didn’t know before.

Love should deepen peace—not replace it.

Healthy love should never require us to surrender the peace that God is building within us.

If I ever build a life with someone again, it won’t be because we escaped chaos together.

It will be because we both know how to protect the peace we’ve already found.

I’m no longer waiting for “someday.”

I’m choosing peace today.

Because I’ve learned something I hope I never forget.

Peace is more important than chaos.

Jesus said,

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

— John 14:27 (NIV)

For a long time, I searched for peace in circumstances, accomplishments, and relationships. Today, I’m learning that true peace isn’t something the world gives us. It is a gift from Christ, one that we receive, cultivate, and protect each day as we follow Him.

If you’re reading this and you’re tired…

Tired of waiting.

Tired of chaos.

Tired of believing that peace is always one more step away…

I hope you’ll remember what I’m still learning myself.

Peace doesn’t begin someday.

It begins with the choices we make today.

May God give you the wisdom to recognize His peace, the courage to protect it, and the faith to walk in it.

May God bless you and grant you His peace.
