Before I Call It a Day

It’s Thursday evening, and I’m trying to figure out what to write.

Sunday’s trip back for work took around eleven hours because of a flight delay. Since then, there have been long workdays, follow-ups, and more time at the computer after getting back to the hotel. Today alone involved more than fourteen hours of work.

Tomorrow begins with an early flight. After I land, there’s a call I helped arrange, bringing people together from across the country to work through an issue. I’m hopeful we’ll make progress, and even with how tired I am, that feels good.

This week has included encouraging moments: good feedback, questions answered, and people helping one another determine what needs to happen next. It has also included advice—people challenging my approach, offering different perspectives, and helping me see where I could improve.

I appreciate both.

I’m willing to speak up when I see something that needs attention. Sometimes I can recognize how pieces connect or where a complicated process might be simplified. But seeing a possibility doesn’t mean I know every step required to make it work. I still have plenty to learn.

One of my mentors reminded me that we all see things from different angles. We may share the same goal while approaching problems, organizing, and leading in different ways.

Someone else may notice what I missed, bring experience I haven’t gained, or know how to involve others more effectively. Their perspective can help turn an idea into something useful. Sometimes that help comes through encouragement; sometimes through a critique that takes more effort to hear. I want to value both and listen closely enough to learn.

I’ve also come to appreciate someone I didn’t quite know how to read at first. Working together gives you a fuller picture of a person—their responsibilities, how they approach problems, and how much they care about getting things right.

Somewhere along the way, I found myself thinking, “I want to help him succeed.”

We’ve faced obstacles, and there is still work ahead. But when the people around us succeed, that success reaches beyond one person and helps everyone trying to move the work forward.

We don’t always know the pressure someone else is carrying, or what their perspective might teach us. Learning from others takes time, patience, and a willingness to listen. I believe God uses these relationships to help us grow through encouragement, example, and honest conversations that challenge us to reconsider how we work.

Tonight, I’m thankful for the people who have done their part, answered questions, worked through difficult pieces, and taken the time to advise me. I’m grateful for those who recognize what I may miss, encourage what I do well, and care enough to tell me where I can improve.

There will be more to do tomorrow: an early flight, another conversation, and hopefully another step forward.

But before I call it a day, I want to recognize the good that happened this week—and the people who helped make it happen.

Then I need to get some sleep.
