I put a lot into getting things ready before coming home this weekend.
There were conversations to arrange, inspections to coordinate, questions to ask, and documents to track down. I wanted everything in place so the work could move forward.
Then some of the checks failed.
That was disappointing. After all the effort to get the right people together and have things ready, I wanted a different result.
But those checks had a purpose. They found problems that still needed attention. Getting everyone there was worthwhile, even though the answers weren’t what we hoped for.
I can help arrange the inspection. I can ask questions, follow up, and make sure an issue reaches someone who can address it. I can’t make something pass by wanting it badly enough.
I know that. It can still be difficult to accept when I’ve invested so much time and thought into helping it happen.
Saturday, I spent another hour or two at the computer, updating what I could and moving inspections into review where the supporting documents were available. Some still had to wait. I had asked for the missing information, and there was only so much more I could do from here.
Eventually, I stopped.
Earlier in the day, I had slept, taken a nap, and exercised. By evening, I felt better. I sat down to watch a movie—something I hadn’t done in a while.
It felt good to have a little of the day left for that.
There is plenty happening at home, too. Mom is working toward getting the rest of her belongings moved. More help is expected Sunday, and my hope is that we can get the biggest pieces finished together. There are still appliances, clothes, food, and the things that always seem to remain near the end of a move.
Maybe a borrowed trailer, a few willing hands, and some pizza will get us a long way.
I had told Mom I couldn’t come Saturday. I needed the rest. I don’t particularly like having to say that when there is work to do, but I was exhausted.
I also made some progress with things at my own house. I started loading my truck with a bicycle, tools, and other belongings I need to move. Thinking about everything waiting here had felt a little overwhelming. Getting one load ready gave me a start. The rest can happen over another weekend.
And I got the laundry washed, including some things I hadn’t finished before. Usually, that can become a last-day task, something I’m still trying to finish the night before leaving.
This time, it’s done. I just need to put it away.
Those are small things, but it feels good to have them taken care of.
Now I’m looking forward to church, seeing people I care about, and helping with what I can.
This weekend has reminded me how easily I can keep carrying a task after I’ve reached the limit of what I can do about it. I’ll go over the conversation again, think of another follow-up, or check for an answer that hasn’t arrived.
Sometimes another step is needed. Sometimes I’ve already taken the steps available to me, and I need to let the work wait.
I’m learning to bring that uncertainty to God, too. I can pray for wisdom about what needs my attention and trust Him with the parts I can’t settle tonight.
There will be more questions when I return to work. There will be things to follow up on and problems that need another attempt.
For now, I’m home. I’ve had some rest. A few things that were hanging over me are taken care of, and there are people to see and a family task we hope to finish together.
I want to be present for that, too.
